Tech-Driven Policing Cuts Crime By 23% In Anakapalli

VISAKHAPATNAM: Anakapalli district recorded a 23 per cent decline in overall crime in 2025, driven by technology-enabled policing, intensified surveillance and community cooperation, according to the annual crime report released at the district police review meeting on Tuesday.

Addressing the meeting, superintendent of police Tuhin Sinha said the total number of cases registered fell sharply from 7,573 in 2024 to 5,821 in 2025.

Crimes against women showed significant improvement, declining from 387 cases in 2024 to 291 in 2025. Kidnapping cases dropped by 85 per cent, while dowry harassment cases declined by 11 per cent. Cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act showed a marginal reduction, from 44 to 43.

Murder cases fell from 17 in 2024 to 11 in 2025, while bodily offences declined from 591 to 417 cases during the period.

Cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act decreased from 162 in 2024 to 128 in 2025.

To strengthen surveillance, the department installed 3,573 new CCTV cameras across the district. The use of technology helped solve 41 cases, while fingerprint analysis through AFIS aided the detection of 58 cases.

Of the 316 missing person cases registered in 2025, police successfully traced 257 individuals, including 149 women and 42 girls. Through three mobile recovery melas, police returned 1,880 mobile phones worth approximately ₹3.70 crore to victims.

As part of intensified anti-narcotics operations, police registered 128 NDPS cases and arrested 411 persons. They seized 8,790.88 kg of ganja, valued at around ₹4.41 crore, along with 7.39 litres of hashish oil and 115 vehicles. Properties worth ₹1.25 crore belonging to six major offenders were frozen, and 312 ganja offenders were placed under suspect sheets.

Despite the overall decline in crime, cybercrime cases increased from 61 in 2024 to 76 in 2025, while social media harassment cases rose from 19 to 21. Property offences recorded a marginal rise from 406 to 417 cases, whereas cheating cases declined from 131 to 125. Criminal breach of trust cases also dipped slightly, from 18 in 2024 to 17 in 2025.
