New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the YSR Congress Party's (YSRCP) plea to extend the nomination deadline for the local body elections in Andhra Pradesh. The court also disposed of the party’s petition concerning the polls.
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) told the court that it had complied with the directions issued during the previous hearing. Noting that the nomination period had already ended, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant remarked, “Now contest the elections, all the best.” About the allegations that candidates were prevented from filing nominations in ocal body elections involve disputed questions of fact that cannot be adjudicated at this stage, the Court stated. The Bench noted that the SEC has already considered representations and extended nomination deadlines in certain cases. Those claiming wrongful exclusion may pursue election petitions, subject to establishing their claims under law, it said. The apex court directed the Election Commission to install CCTV cameras at the respective polling stations and to preserve the footage.
YSRCP’s counsel Maninder Singh told the court that opposition parties were not being allowed to file their nominations. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who argued on behalf of the AP State Election Commission, told the court the steps it had taken in line with the earlier orders of the Supreme Court.
