Sullurpeta Man Gets 20-Year RI for Killing Wife

TIRUPATI: The VIII Additional District and Sessions Court in Nellore has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of ₹2,000 for killing his wife within the limits of Sullurpeta police station in Tirupati district.

According to the prosecution, on February 28, 2017, at Jangalagunta village in Sullurpeta mandal, accused Puli Munuswami (35), under the influence of alcohol, assaulted his wife Mounika following an argument. He went on to pour kerosene over her and set her on fire. The woman suffered severe burn injuries and died in a hospital in Nellore in the early hours of March 4, 2017.

Sullurpeta police registered a case, carried out an investigation, collected material evidence, and examined witnesses, enabling the prosecutor to establish the charges against Munuswami in the court. Considering the evidence on record, judge M. Somashekhar found the accused guilty and awarded him 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹2,000.

Tirupati district superintendent of police L. Subba Rayudu said the case had initially been investigated by then Sullurpeta circle inspector T. Vijay Krishna, who arrested the accused. Officer N. Kishore Babu filed the charge sheet. Present CI M. Murali Krishna followed up the trial along with court head constable Shaik Khaja Hussain and court liaison officer Venkateshwarulu.

The SP appreciated Naidupeta DSP Chenchu Babu and other police and court staff for securing the conviction.
