VISAKHAPATNAM: A wave of student protests erupted at Andhra University (AU), with hundreds of students demonstrating overnight against unhygienic food, crumbling hostel infrastructure, and lack of basic amenities.

The protest, which started on Tuesday night, intensified on Wednesday as students assembled outside Vice Chancellor GP Rajasekhar’s office.

Students alleged they were billed for substandard meals, often contaminated with worms. The lack of clean drinking water, functional bathrooms, and proper beds added to their frustration.

“We’re being made to pay for food we can’t eat and rooms we can’t sleep in,” said Avinash, a representative from the Disha student organisation. “This indifference is appalling, especially during the university’s centenary year.”

Female students specifically highlighted issues such as unusable bathrooms and inadequate water in women’s hostels. Student unions have promised to escalate the agitation unless written commitments with deadlines are provided by the administration.
