The Gangamma Jatara happens to be a famous folk festival in the pilgrim city of Tirupati, which began on May 6 and will continue till May 13.

Initially, special prayers were offered to Sri Pundarikavalli Ammavaru in Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple in Tirupati, and then the Sare was taken out in a colourful procession amidst pomp and gaiety.

Speaking to the media on this occasion, TTD chairman BR Naidu said that Gangamma is believed to be the sister of Sri Venkateswara Swamy and that devotees offer worship to this folk Goddess with utmost devotion.

“The festival will be held in a unique way to reflect the customs and lifestyles of the people of Tirupati and the surrounding areas. The development programmes of the Tatayya Gunta Gangamma Temple are being carried out at a fast pace with TTD funds, and the same cooperation will be provided in the future,” he said.

Speaking on this occasion, TTD EO Syamala Rao said that it is customary to offer Sare to the goddess on the fourth day of the festival every year in the month of Chaitra. He said that arrangements have been made for the Gangamma Jatara with a cost of Rs 60 lakh and various development works with a cost of `3.50 crore will start soon.

The EO said the devotees from the surrounding areas of Tirupati, as well as from the states of Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, visit during the Gangamma Jatara every year.

Local MLA A. Srinivasulu, TTD board members G. Bhanu Prakash Reddy, Shantha Ram, deputy EOs Shanthi, Lokanadham, VGO Sadalakshmi, AEO Muni Krishna Reddy and others participated.
