Spate of Murders Raises Alarm in Rayalaseema; Over 25 Killed in Six Months

Kadapa: A disturbing surge in murder cases across Rayalaseema districts is raising serious concerns among residents, particularly students and parents. More than 25 murders have been reported in Kurnool, Kadapa, and Nandyal districts in the past six months, with a shift in the nature of violent crimes in the region.

Traditionally, murders in Rayalaseema have largely been linked to factional feuds. However, recent incidents point to a worrying trend, where family disputes, property conflicts, and so-called honour killings, have become the primary causes.

In a shocking incident on April 10, 2026, Ramakeerthana (20), a resident of Agraharam village in Khajipet mandal, was brutally hacked to death by one Avula Venkatesh after she reportedly rejected his advances. Before the shock of this incident could subside, another gruesome case emerged in Kadapa town. A painter, Babu, allegedly murdered his daughter Harika for being in a relationship, citing family honour. In the same incident, he also killed his wife Obulamma.

“These back-to-back incidents have created fear and anxiety among the public, especially among youth and parents,” said a local resident.

Kadapa superintendent of police Shelke Nachiket Vishwanath acknowledged the trend, stating, “It is true that murders arising out of personal disputes, love affairs, and family conflicts have increased in recent times. The unpredictable nature of these crimes makes it difficult to prevent them.”

Adding to the concern, police officials point to the rise in murders committed under the influence of alcohol. On July 28, a 50-year-old man, Jinka Ankalayya, was attacked by unidentified drunk persons in Nallapureddypalle near Pulivendula over a financial dispute.

Another alarming development is the involvement of minors in serious crimes. In a case reported on July 11 in Yerraguntla, Veeranjaneyulu (46) had been murdered, with two minors being identified as the accused. Police investigations revealed that the juveniles had a history of petty thefts.

“The involvement of minors in such heinous crimes indicates a growing criminal mindset at a very young age,” a police official said.

Family disputes and illicit relationships too are emerging as major triggers. On August 3, in Enakandla village under Banaganapalle constituency in Nandyal district, a man identified as Maddileti allegedly murdered his son Madhu following a domestic dispute.

Mental health experts stress the need for counselling and awareness. “Many parents, due to lack of education and awareness, fail to handle sensitive issues rationally. Emotional outbursts often lead to extreme actions. Counselling can play a crucial role in resolving such conflicts,” said noted psychiatrist Dr. Endluri Prabhakar.

He pointed to the influence of social media in affecting the behaviour of youth. “Youngsters are increasingly getting influenced by unrealistic portrayals and emotional triggers online. Both parents and youth need guidance and counselling,” Dr. Prabhakar observed.

With rising suicides, road accidents, and now a spike in murders, law enforcement agencies are facing mounting pressure. The growing number of killings in just three districts within a short span highlights the urgency for preventive measures and community awareness initiatives.
