Visakhapatnam: The collapse of a newly constructed wall at Simhachalam Temple that resulted in the death of seven devotees has caused public outrage and raised calls for accountability.

The wall, at over 9 feet high and 70 feet length, was ready five days before the Chandanotsavam festival.

Moderate rainfall undercut the wall's weak foundation. Thousands of devotees had gathered at the hilltop temple for Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy's Nijaroopa Darshanam when the incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses and family members of the victims have alleged negligence in the construction and festival arrangements. The wall, they noted, was constructed using fly ash bricks unsuitable for constructions in hilly areas.

Additionally, the newly built wall was overloaded with iron rods.

Tourism regional director Subramanyam said tenders had been issued for the construction work but he did not reveal the name of the contractor. However, sources within APTDCO said it was the K Anantha Rao and Co, a firm based in Srikakulam.

It is said that the wall was completed in a hasty manner to meet the festival deadline. Construction experts say if the wall had been constructed with traditional red bricks and concrete, it would have been more strong and safe.

This incident raised questions about oversight and accountability. Local residents and the families of the victims are demanding justice, including an inquiry. They criticised the contractor and the devastanam’s handling of the wall's construction, accusing officials of negligence.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita promised a thorough investigation and legal action.
