Nellore: The usually serene Children’s Park in Nellore came alive on Sunday as it marked 25 years with grand Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Organised by the Walkers Association, the event brought together citizens, local leaders, and long-time supporters of the park for a day filled with nostalgia, pride, and renewed vision for the future.

Once a dumping yard, the park was transformed two and a half decades ago into a green oasis for the community. The transformation marked a turning point, offering a safe space for children to play and elders to walk and relax.

A floral tribute was paid to the late J.S. Reddy, whose vision and dedication laid the foundation for the park. Former Municipal Chairperson Tallapaka Anuradha reflected on her role in securing approval for the park during her tenure, recalling how the idea was born during the “Janmabhoomi” initiative.

She highlighted the challenges in replacing the dumping yard with a green space and the subsequent development of roads and amenities. “It’s an honour to see the park flourish into a city landmark,” she said.

Deputy mayor P. Roop Kumar Yadav noted how far the city had progressed, pointing out that Nellore once had just two parks. “Today, thanks to focused leadership, we have 48 parks across the city,” he said.

Several speakers praised the government’s commitment to green spaces, attributing Nellore’s transformation to a vision that prioritised urban development and citizen well-being.

During the event, development plans were unveiled, including the installation of ₹28 lakh worth of modern play equipment accommodating up to 70 children at once. Vayugundam Venkateswarlu of Virtusa Developers pledged ₹40 lakh toward the park’s modernisation, while consultants from Leo will redesign the park in consultation with the community.

Authorities also announced the introduction of new cleaning machines and road maintenance programmes to bolster the city’s cleanliness efforts.
