Sharp Drop in Violent Crime, Extremism Drives 34% Decline in ASR District
The district registered 1,498 cases in 2025, down from 2,304 in 2024 and 1,958 in 2023, taking the three-year total to 5,760 cases

Visakhapatnam: Crime in Alluri Sitharama Raju district declined by a significant 34 per cent in 2025, reflecting major reductions in violent offences, narcotics-related crimes, cybercrime and extremist activity, according to official police data released at the annual press meet held on Monday.
The district registered 1,498 cases in 2025, down from 2,304 in 2024 and 1,958 in 2023, taking the three-year total to 5,760 cases.
Serious crimes showed a marked decline, with murder cases falling from 27 in 2024 to 20 in 2025, while rape cases dropped from 25 to 22. Bodily offences also reduced from 183 cases in 2024 to 156 in 2025.
However, some categories recorded an increase. Theft cases rose from 44 in 2024 to 50 in 2025, the highest figure over the past three years.
Anti-narcotics operations yielded notable results, with the registration of 135 NDPS cases in 2025, down sharply from 232 in 2024 and 261 in 2023. Police seized 14,484.38 kg of dry ganja and 35.61 kg of hashish oil during the year, compared to 23,366.25 kg of dry ganja and 91.2 kg of hashish oil seized in 2024.
A total of 358 accused were arrested in 2025, significantly lower than 1,016 arrests in 2024. Of those arrested, 242 were from within the state and 122 from other states. Police also apprehended 178 absconding accused from previous cases, including 88 within the district, 31 from other districts and 59 from other states.
Extremism-related incidents continued to decline. In 2025, police reported encounters (EOF cases) in which 18 Maoists were neutralised, along with five dump recovery cases and four cases under other Acts. Police arrested nine extremists and facilitated 49 surrenders during the year.
Crimes against women showed a further decline, falling from 23 cases in 2024 to 21 in 2025, compared to 29 cases in 2023.жай POCSO cases also dropped from 16 in 2023 to 10 in 2025, while SC/ST Act cases stood at one in 2025, down from three in 2024.
Cybercrime cases reduced to 10 in 2025, compared to 18 in 2024. House burglaries, however, increased marginally to 68 cases in 2025 from 53 in 2024.
Despite the overall reduction in crime, road accidents remained a major concern. Fatal accidents rose to 176 in 2025, up from 164 in 2024 and 135 in 2023, indicating a worrying trend. Non-fatal accidents declined from 87 in 2024 to 73 in 2025.
Traffic enforcement intensified during the year, with motor vehicle challans increasing from 4,745 cases, generating ₹16.7 lakh in 2024, to 10,706 cases, collecting ₹97.4 lakh in 2025.
Missing person cases stood at 67 in 2025, with a tracing rate of 87.14 per cent, as 61 of the 70 reported cases were successfully resolved. All four kidnapping cases reported during the year were solved.
The district recorded 96 suicides in 2025, an improvement from 111 in 2024. Drowning deaths also declined from 56 to 41 during the same period.
The year also saw 13 notable convictions, including five life imprisonment sentences, one 20-year sentence, two 10-year sentences, and one sentence ranging between five and seven years.
