TIRUPATI: The sexual harassment case involving a B.Ed student at National Sanskrit University (NSU) here, has reached the National Commission for Women through a formal complaint from Tirupati MP, Maddila Gurumurthy.
The commission swiftly wrote the university seeking an ‘action taken report’ within 15 days vis-a-vis the allegations of sexual exploitation and harassment by faculty members.
In its communication addressed to NSU vice-chancellor GSR Krishna Murty, the commission attached a copy of the petition and advised the university to examine the matter and initiate appropriate action.
The commission cited laws like the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, and the UGC regulations of 2015 relating to prevention and redressal of sexual harassment in higher educational institutions.
The case relates to allegations from a 27-year-old B.Ed student from Odisha, who accused two assistant professors of sexually assaulting her and later subjecting her to blackmail using photographs and videos.
Following a complaint filed by the university registrar, Tirupati police recently registered a case and arrested the two faculty members after recording the student’s statement from her home in Odisha.
The matter had also been raised in the Lok Sabha.
