Senior Inter Students Rag and Beat Up Junior in Dachepalli

VIJAYAWADA: Senior intermediate students beat up a first-year student staying at the BC hostel in Dachepalli of Palnadu district in the name of ragging on Thursday night. The incident came to light on Sunday when video clips of the incident went viral on social media. Police have started an investigation.

According to police, the victim is a student of a government junior college in Dachepalli. The assailants are two senior students from the hostel and three others. The group reportedly beat the student repeatedly and continued to assault him even as he pleaded for mercy. Reports allege the attackers even attempted to give an electric shock using a live wire.

The student informed the hostel warden M. Deepika about the incident on Friday. The warden passed on the information to police, who visited the hostel and carried out an initial inquiry. When the video surfaced on social media late Saturday night, police said they reassessed the situation and have launched further inquiries.

Gurazala DSP S. Jagadish disclosed that a criminal case has been registered and three of the five accused have been taken into custody. A search is on for the other two. The DSP said further action will be based on findings of the investigation and any additional evidence.
