Vijayawada: In a major development in execution of the Polavaram irrigation project in Eluru district, a team of scientists from the Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) inspected on Friday sites from where soil, rock, gravel and other components will be excavated for construction of the earth-cum-rock-fill (ECRF) dam.
Detailed quality assurance studies are to be carried out on these materials to determine their suitability for building the ECRF dam.
The team of scientists comprising Harendra Prakash, Uday Bhanu Chakraborty and Siddarth P. Hedaoo collected samples of soil from the designated areas. These samples will be tested in the lab to find out their engineering properties and suitability for the construction of the dam.
The team will also carry out quality tests at GP-1 and Gap-2 zones of the Polavaram project.
Significantly, the scientists conducted the preliminary tests at the site itself, before collecting specified quantities of the available soil, rock and gravel materials for comprehensive lab analyses.
AP Water Resources officials accompanied the scientists of CSMRS, which functions under the Jal Shakthi ministry.
