Sabari Overflowing, Second Warning Issued; Godavari in Spate Within Three Days

Kakinada: With the Sabari river in spate and overflowing, some people of the agency mandals like Kunavaram, Chinturu, VR Puram, Velerupadu, Kukkunuru etc were being evacuated from their villages as a precautionary measure on Monday.

By late evening, the water levels reached 18.1 metres at Bhadrachalam. Due to bitter experiences in the past, the people are evacuating themselves from the villages and reaching safer places.

In Rampachodavaram, rivulets like Pedderu, Pamuleru etc were overflowing due to heavy rains. Eluru collector Vetri Selvi has called a flood review meet at Velerupadu on Tuesday. ASR collector Dinesh Kumar reviewed the Godavari flood situation on Monday and issued an advisory for officials to take precautionary steps.

IMD has forecast a rise in the floods in Godavari river by night on July 9. The floods may touch danger levels by July 10 and later the levels could recede gradually. Eluru collector Vetri Selvi said heavy rainfall was likely in the Godavari Basin in the coming three days as per an alert issued by the Central Water Commission. It is likely that 9 lakh cusecs of water reached the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage by July 12.

Konaseema collector Mahesh convened a meeting with the officials at MPDO office at I Polavaram on Monday and said all steps should be taken to save the flood victims.

Tahsildar Vijaya Sri, MPDO Sarma, electrical DE Srinivasa Rao, RWS DE Ram Prasad and others were present.

At Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, the water levels reached 7.70 feet and it discharged 1,85,143 lakh cusecs of waters into Bay of Bengal and 12,650 cusecs was released to canals of three deltas.
