Nellore: Power minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Sunday said that education is the greatest of all gifts, as it not only sustains an individual but also strengthens society as a whole. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of PVR School, the minister said that while food charity feeds a person for a day, education empowers a person for life and brings lasting change to society.

Praising initiatives in the education sector, Ravi Kumar said municipal administration minister Dr Ponguru Narayana had built the VRC School in Nellore on a par with private institutions, setting a strong example.
He urged people not to depend solely on the government and called upon individuals, alumni and donors to contribute actively to social development, especially in strengthening rural education.
Referring to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s P4 initiative, he said it aims to reduce economic inequality by encouraging public participation in development. He added that government schools are undergoing major reforms free from political interference.
Highlighting a student welfare measure, Ravi Kumar said that in Addanki, where many children walk long distances to school, the government has started the free distribution of bicycles. With donor support, 6,500 bicycles have already been given to students.
He said the student phase is special as it is during this time that lifelong friendships are formed.
