KURNOOL: Doctors at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool, have successfully performed a complex spinal surgery on an 18-year-old girl with a rare S-shaped spinal deformity.

Addressing a press meet, the doctors said the patient, from Vamasamudram village in Kurnool district, had suffered for years from headaches, walking imbalance and progressive spinal curvature. She had earlier undergone surgery in 2019 for Arnold–Chiari Malformation. As the deformity worsened into a severe hunchback, she was referred to KIMS due to high risk of neurological damage. Consultant spine surgeon Dr. Shaik Mannan and orthopaedics HOD Dr. Kiran Kumar told the media that a 50-degree curvature from D2 to L4 was corrected using 30 specialised spinal screws with continuous neuro-monitoring, achieving nearly 90 per cent correction and restoring near-normal posture. Doctors said that the surgery was performed free of cost under the Aarogyasri scheme.
