KAKINADA: The historic Rajamahendravaram city already needs to improve its road infrastructure. In particular, its roads need widening due to its growing population and people of suburbs and neighbouring villages coming into the city to purchase their essential requirements.

Strengthening of road infrastructure in and around Rajamahendravaram is all the more imperative because the Godavari Pushkaralu are scheduled in 2027. Eight crore pilgrims are expected to visit the city over 12 days to have a dip in Godavari along the river’s course in Rajahmundry.

The existing \ roads are narrow and already congested, rendering even two-wheeler movement difficult in the city. Realising the urgent need, the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation officials have proposed widening of 10–15 roads in the city before the Pushkaralu begin.

The effort to widen roads began in earnest with the previous commissioner Ketan Garg okaying doubling the width of the 80 feet road between Kotipalli Bus Stand and road-cum-railway bridge from Visweswara Swamy Temple for which ₹1.50 crore had been sanctioned.

However, residents want the road widened to only 60 feet but officials say 80 feet is the minimum to meet the future needs. In addition, another road at Gadalamma Puntha is to be widened for which residents have agreed. Road construction will start once a drain along the way is constructed. Likewise, the 100-feet road at G.V. Nagar needs widening.

At present, RTC Complex to Thadithota and RTC Complex to Hukumpeta

roads need widening after some malls have opened along these roads, which continue to be used by RTC and private school buses, apart from other vehicles.
Further, there are over 12 roads that lead to the Godavari River through the old city. Most of these are very narrow. They need to be widened ahead of the Godavari Pushkaralu. But many merchants of the old city are opposing their widening, as they will lose their shops and businesses in the widening. Rajamahendravaram Chamber of Commerce is also opposing the proposal.
Senior leader of the chamber Ashok Kumar Jain asserted that Rajamahendravaram Old City’s historic appearance must be preserved, as is the case of Varanasi. He maintained that though Varanasi has been provided a new look, the old city near River Ganges has been preserved.
Godavari Parirakshana Samithi president T.K. Visweswara Reddy too said though there is a necessity of widening of the roads connecting to River Godavari, it will not be proper as many traders will lose their livelihoods. He observed that roads must be widened or built on the city outskirts or passing the villages that are being merged into Rajamahendravaram city.
Overall, there is consensus among citizens of Rajamahendravaram that roads between Devichowk and Jandapanja, Meraka Veedhi, Vegetable Market to Main Road, and other internal roads connecting to the Main Road must be widened and developed.
