Rain Lash Araku Valley as Southwest Monsoon Advances
The Araku Valley received the highest rainfall of 4.9 cm in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Bobbili in Vizianagaram recorded 1.38 cm, followed by 0.96 cm rain in Marripudi of Prakasam district
Visakhapatnam: Rains lashed Araku Valley in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, while the Southwest Monsoon continued its northward advance across the region.
An IMD report on Wednesday said conditions are favourable for further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, parts of the Comorin region, south Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next three to four days.
While the Araku Valley received the highest rainfall of 4.9 cm in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Bobbili in Vizianagaram recorded 1.38 cm, followed by 0.96 cm rain in Marripudi of Prakasam district.
In Rayalaseema, Agali in Sri Sathya Sai district recorded a rainfall of 1.96 cm and Holagunda in Kurnool 1.72 cm.
"The northern limit of the monsoon is currently extending up to specific coordinates across the Bay of Bengal region. A surface depression has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast, which is influencing weather patterns across the state," the IMD Amaravati report stated.
For Andhra Pradesh, the IMD has predicted a mix of light to moderate rain and thundershowers across north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema over the next three days.
Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds, with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph, are likely throughout the state. On May 15, heavy rains are expected at isolated locations in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, while by May 16, heavy rainfall is also anticipated in parts of Rayalaseema.
Despite the rainfall, however, hot, humid and uncomfortable weather is expected to persist in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather department is attributing these conditions to multiple meteorological factors, including a surface trough extending from east Bihar to north Rayalaseema across Jharkhand, Vidarbha and Telangana at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
On Wednesday, Tirupati (AP) recorded the highest maximum temperature of 41.1°C. Nellore and Bapatla reported 40.3°C each. Kalingapatnam and Visakhapatnam recorded 34.6°C and 35.9°C, respectively. Nandigama reported 38.1°C and Anantapur recorded 38.9°C.
