Tirupati: A sudden spell of rain accompanied by strong winds threw normal life out of gear in Tirupati on Sunday afternoon, bringing the temple city to a standstill for several hours.
The downpour, which began around noon and lasted for over two hours, brought respite from the sweltering heat but left a trail of destruction. Several trees were uprooted in Tiruchanoor, Damineedu and nearby areas. Many of these fell on power lines, causing widespread outages.
Power supply was hit from 12.30 pm in several areas and had not been fully restored even by 7.30 pm, despite efforts by electricity department staff. The delay in restoration drew criticism from residents, though officials said repair work was hampered by access issues due to fallen trees and debris.
Public and private property also bore the brunt of the storm. Hoardings were torn down, while several vehicles — mainly two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws — were damaged by falling branches. Waterlogging was reported on major roads, leading to traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters.
