Rain for AP After Monsoon Period: IMD

Visakhapatnam:Weather systems for Andhra Pradesh, which brings loads of rain to the state, would form during the post monsoon period, said senior scientist at IMD Amaravati, S. Karunasagar.

So far three systems have formed over northwest Bay of Bengal, which ere normal. During July and August, the monsoon trough usually extends from northwest India to the northwest Bay of Bengal. This creates a favorable zone for air to converge and pressure to fall.

In 2026, another factor is the persistent positioning of the monsoon trough, which repeatedly stayed close to the Odisha–West Bengal coast. That has favored repeated genesis in the northwest Bay of Bengal, while the central and southern Bay have remained comparatively less favorable.

Karunasagar said if the systems are formed over southeast Bay of Bengal or Andaman Sea, it might form into a low pressure system off the AP coast to bring heavy rains to the state.

Director of Cyclone Warning Centre, PLN Murthy, said a strong El Nino factor was depriving the monsoon systems in Bay of Bengal both in west central and southeast Bay.

The present situation was similar to the 2002 drought in undivided Andhra Pradesh, which suffered severe drought affecting agriculture and drinking water.

In the present season, AP experienced one of the worst early monsoon deficits, with statewide shortfall reaching around 69 per cent at one stage in June, prompting the state government to activate El Nino action plans.

In July too, the state suffered a rainfall deficit of 38 per cent, mainly due to uneven monsoon activity linked to El Nino.

North Andhra remained the worst-affected with Visakhapatnam registering 65.5 per cent deficit, followed by ASR district 53.5, Parvathipuram Manyam 53.3 per cent and Polavaram district 45.4 per cent.
