Vijayawada: The Vijayawada division of South Central Railway (SCR) on Wednesday organised a plantation drive at Vambay Colony in Vijayawada as part of the World Environment Day campaign being observed from May 15 to June 5 under the national initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’.
The campaign aims to promote environmental responsibility while encouraging people to strengthen their bond with nature through tree plantation.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Mohit Sonakiya led the plantation drive by planting native saplings along with senior railway officials, staff and branch officers.
Additional divisional railway manager (infrastructure) P.E. Edwin and additional divisional railway manager (operations) Srinivasa Rao Konda also participated.
Addressing the gathering, Sonakiya stressed the importance of sustainable urban forestry in tackling rising temperatures and improving air quality in residential areas.
He said the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign was not merely about planting trees, but about nurturing every sapling with care and responsibility.
The DRM also appreciated the efforts of senior divisional engineer M. Vamsikanth and his team for conducting activities under the World Environment Day campaign across the division.
As part of the campaign, railway authorities have been conducting awareness programmes against the use of plastic and promoting environmentally sustainable lifestyle practices.
Officials urged people to avoid single-use plastic items such as water bottles and cutlery and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
Railway officials said the Vijayawada railway division was also conducting waste management awareness programmes and energy conservation initiatives as part of its environmental efforts. They said the division aimed to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable practices by involving railway employees and the public in green initiatives.
