Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said the Union Budget this year has allocated Rs 2,78,000 crore for the railways, with a capital expenditure of Rs 2,93,000 crore.

Andhra Pradesh, he said, has seen the annual average railway budget allocation increase nearly 11 times, from Rs 886 crore during 2009–14 (for combined AP and TG) to Rs 10,134 crore in 2026–27.

The railway minister made these announcements while interacting with divisional railway managers across the country on Monday. He also held detailed discussions with Visakhapatnam DRM Lalit Bohra and Vijayawada DRM Mohit Sonakiya regarding the ongoing and future projects in AP.

Railway works worth Rs 92,649 crore are currently in progress in AP, spanning new track creation, station redevelopment and safety enhancements.

Under the Amrit Station scheme, 73 railway stations in the state have been identified for comprehensive redevelopment, with a total investment of Rs 3,418 crore. Works have been completed at five stations: Sullurpeta, Rayanpadu, Kakinada Town, Mangalagiri, and Tuni, delivering upgraded passenger facilities and improved station aesthetics.

Passenger travel efficiency has increased with the expansion of premium train services in the state. Currently, eight pairs of Vande Bharat Express and eight pairs of Amrit Bharat Express services are operational.

Andhra Pradesh has achieved substantial progress in rail network expansion since 2014. Approximately 1,700km of new railway tracks have been constructed, which is more than the entire rail network of Sri Lanka.

The state has also achieved 100 per cent electrification, with 1,949km of rail lines electrified since 2014. Additionally, 805 flyovers and underpasses have been erected, significantly enhancing road-rail connectivity and safety.
