Kakinada: BJP state president and Rajamahendravaram Lok Sabha member D. Purandeswarion Monday urged union Jal Shakti minister C.R. Paatil to release Rs 268.50 crore for development of the Yerra Kalva in West Godavari and Krishna districts, which has been getting flooded and causing havoc during heavy rains.

She submitted a memorandum to the Minister at New Delhi on Monday stating that the Yerra Kalva River originates in Eastern Ghats and after running for 194 km, it falls into the Upputeru salt creek. After the river caused several floods, as per the suggestion of the Central Water Commission’s Mitra Committee in 1964–65, a bund with a capacity of 4.428 TMC had been constructed across the river at Konguvarigudem of Jangareddygudem mandal in the present Eluru district during 1988 to divert the water through Yerra Kalva canal.
But following floods and devastation, the canal has to be modernised. As per the technical advisory council, the Yerra Kalva for a length of 33.39 km up to Nandamuru Aqueduct, and the Yenamudhuru drain for a length of 65 km, should be widened to carry a flood discharge of 20,250 cusecs.
Purandeswari requested the Jal Shakti minister to release the necessary funds for the project. She said that the minister has responded positively to completion of the project.
The Rajamahendravaram MP said estimates have been prepared for carrying out temporary restoration works at a cost of ₹3 crore.
