Vijayawada:The Archaeological Survey of India has found the first epigraphical reference of Guntur in Pune copper plates of the King Vishnuvardhana II of the Eastern Chalukya Dynasty issued in his first regnal year, dated in 669 CE.

The 10th-century Ederu copper plate inscription mentioned the name of Guntur as 'Gomturu', and the word appeared in inscriptions dating from the 10th to the 14th century.
