Visakhapatnam: How providence plays a role in tragedies finds reflection in the blast at the Steel Melt Shop (SMS) of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Monday evening that killed eight workers and injured six.

Senior trade union leader Varasala Srinivasa Rao told this correspondent that RINL (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of VSP) had hired 14 young engineering graduates and diploma holders on contract basis. These youth had been undergoing training in the SMS.

It is just providence that the entire group of these youngsters had gone out for tea to a canteen located half a kilometre from the SMS. When they returned, they saw their trainers and senior colleagues roasted under1,600 degrees Celsius.

“The youngsters got awestruck. They returned to their hostel praying to god for saving their lives,” Srinivasa Rao said.

Similarly, four workers – Kamaraju, Tata Rao, Syamala Rao, and Eswara Rao – working at the SMS ahead of the blast had a miraculous escape.

“We four came out of the Steel Melt Shop to drink water. We planned to go inside and invite some worker colleagues for tea when we saw a huge ball of fire. Everything got over by the time we came to our senses,” Tata Rao told this correspondent.
