VIJAYAWADA: Union minister of state for rural development and communications Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar on Saturday said Guntur would witness significant civic improvements over the next six to 12 months as the Guntur Municipal Corporation accelerates infrastructure and development projects.

Chairing a review meeting at the Guntur Collectorate, the minister reviewed the progress of ongoing and proposed works with public representatives and senior officials.

Speaking to the media, Dr Pemmasani said advanced technology-based water meters would be introduced to reduce leakages and improve water management. Technology-driven sanitation systems and scientific solid waste collection mechanisms for residential and commercial areas would also be implemented. Electric vehicle charging stations will be established across the city, he added.

The minister reviewed issues relating to the Sankar Vilas Road overbridge, land acquisition and rehabilitation packages for the proposed Syamala Nagar overbridge. He also invited private investors to participate in the construction of the PVK Naidu Vegetable Market under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

He said estimates for the Nallapadu Tank and Bongarala Beedu projects had been submitted to the government. Comprehensive water supply from the newly completed Gorantla water tank would begin after completion of AMRUT 2.0 works. The Swachh Andhra Corporation has also sanctioned funds for the construction of 35 public toilets.

Dr Pemmasani said widening of Brindavan Gardens Road had been delayed due to objections from a few property owners, while proposals to widen and repair seven to eight other roads were under consideration. Referring to the stray dog menace, he said sterilisation and control measures had covered around 9,000 of the city's estimated 30,000 stray dogs, though legal and other constraints had slowed the programme.

Guntur East MLA Mohammed Naseer Ahmed said special theme parks with unique concepts would be developed across the city. Junction beautification, landscaping and plantation works would also be taken up, while roads in the East constituency would be upgraded within the next two to three months.

Guntur West MLA Galla Madhavi said the meeting also discussed measures to curb single-use plastics, resolve issues relating to vacant lands and the Muslim burial ground, and relocate roadside statues to a designated site.

MLA B. Ramanjaneyulu said the coalition government was committed to transforming Guntur into a model city through coordinated efforts by the district administration and civic authorities.
