Kakinada: Some followers of Almanac writers say Chayarka Karnarka almanac writers, led by Madhura Pala Sankara Murthy Sarma, celebrated Bhogi on Saturday (January 10) and Sankranti on Sunday (January 11), and they celebrated the Kanuma festival on January 12, Monday.

Principal almanac writer, Madhura Pala Sankara Murthy Sarma, told the Deccan Chronicle that the great astronomy scientist Varahamihra studied for six years from 494 AD to 500 AD the movements of stars, and in relation to the sun planet, and wrote a book, Bruha Samhitha. According to him, when calculations of planets are made, the almanac writers should consider the timing of movements of Sun and calcuations be done on that basis.

“This principle started in 500AD. From then, we calculate and prepare Almanac books on the basis of the movements of the sun,” he said.

He found fault with the Poorva Paddahti and Drik Paddathi and made it clear that the Purva Paddathi is a wrong calculation.

There, he said, is no scientific calculation. The present Drik Principle almanac writers are calculating the sun’s movements from 285AD and there were differences between the Chayarka Karnarka principle and the Drik principle. He claimed that his method of calculation is completely based on Drik Principle and he’s not deviating from the Varahamihira principle.
