KURNOOL: Two young men from Karnataka were swept away after a car carrying six friends plunged into the Tungabhadra Lower Level Canal near Yerigeri village in Kowthalam mandal of Kurnool district on Sunday. One among them died, and another was said to be missing.
The victims, Sunil, 21, and Manikantha, 22, hailed from Hubballi. According to police, the group was returning home after visiting the Sri Raghavendra Swamy temple in Mantralayam when their car lost control and veered into the canal.
Local people and SDRF teams quickly launched a rescue operation. Four of the occupants—Huppayya, Manjunath, Avinash, and Idhar—were safely rescued. However, the strong current swept away Sunil and Manikantha.
Sub-inspector N. Ashok Kumar confirmed that Sunil's body had been recovered, while search efforts are underway to locate Manikantha, who remains missing. A case has been registered, and an investigation is ongoing.
