VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) on Tuesday described nurses as “warriors who save lives” and said the profession symbolised humanity, compassion and selfless service in healthcare.

Addressing International Nurses Day celebrations at the new Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vijayawada, he said nurses worked alongside doctors round the clock, providing patients with confidence, emotional support and quality care with dedication and empathy.

Floral tributes were paid to Florence Nightingale in recognition of her contribution to the nursing profession. A statue of Florence Nightingale was installed at the hospital with `50,000 contributed by retired nursing superintendent G. Akkamma, while the remaining funds were mobilised through the nursing association. 35 nursing personnel were felicitated for distinguished service on the ocasion.

Sivanath said nurses had played a key role in achieving over 80 per cent patient satisfaction at GGH despite limited resources. He said issues relating to the hospital, nursing college and hostel facilities had been brought to the government’s notice and would soon be resolved.

He said the government hospital was conducting complex surgeries on par with private hospitals and gaining public appreciation. Efforts were being made to strengthen infrastructure through government support, CSR initiatives and donor contributions, he added.

NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha said quality healthcare was crucial for achieving the goals of Swarna Andhra and Viksit Bharat. He said the hospital was recording heavy outpatient turnout due to the quality of services and officials were aiming for over 95 per cent patient satisfaction through IVRS feedback.

Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ramamohan Rao said Florence Nightingale’s legacy continued to inspire nurses to serve patients with compassion and humanity.

APNGO state president A. Vidyasagar praised nurses for their sacrifices, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hospital officials and nursing staff attended the programme.
