Tirupati: The Tirupati district police have organised a helmet awareness bike rally involving around 700 motorcycles here on Monday as part of the ongoing “No Helmet – No Petrol” campaign.

The rally was aimed at spreading awareness on the importance of wearing helmets and reducing fatal accidents involving two-wheelers.

The rally was flagged off from the police parade ground by district collector Venkateswar and SP Subba Rayudu. It proceeded through Annamayya circle, MR Palli circle and Balaji colony and ended at the SP office on Prakasam road.

The SP personally rode a motorcycle during the rally, while the collector joined the rally by wearing a helmet.

The collector said a large number of two-wheeler accidents were being reported due to overspeeding and negligence, particularly among young riders. Wearing a helmet could save lives even in serious accidents, he said, and stressed that helmets should be worn not due to fear of penalties, but to protect one’s family. He appealed to youth to ride responsibly and motivate their friends to follow helmet rules.

The SP said helmet use was meant for personal safety. He noted that most road accident victims belonged to the 18 to 35 age-group and that the absence of helmet was a major reason for fatal injuries. Both riders and pillion must wear ISI-marked helmets.

The SP said the objective was accident prevention, not the collection of fines.
