VIJAYAWADA: Transport minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy announced that there would be no hike in APSRTC fares this year and that the free bus travel facility for women would continue as usual during the Sankranti festival.

The minister said the Andhra Pradesh government had taken several passenger-friendly decisions to ensure hassle-free travel for people heading to their native places during the festive rush. He made it clear that no additional or special charges would be imposed on bus services during Sankranti, despite the surge in demand.

Ramprasad Reddy urged passengers travelling in private and personal vehicles to remain cautious and strictly adhere to traffic rules to ensure safe journeys. He described the decision to keep fares unchanged and continue free travel for women as a Sankranti gift from the state government to the travelling public.

Issuing a stern warning to private bus operators, the minister said any attempt to illegally hike fares or collect excess charges would invite strict action. Buses found violating norms would be seized without exception, he cautioned.

The minister appealed to all commuters and transport operators to cooperate with the authorities and celebrate the festival in a safe, orderly and joyous manner.
