NMC Likely To Extend Deadline For MBBS Admissions
NTR University of Health Sciences has also sought reduction in the qualifying percentile for NEET-UG: Reports
VIJAYAWADA: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revealed that it will examine Andhra Pradesh government's request to extend the deadline for MBBS admissions for the 2026–27 academic year and reduce the qualifying percentile for NEET-UG.
The development comes after authorities have been unable to fill 112 MBBS seats under the NRI quota even after the stray vacancy counselling. Following this, Dr, NTR University of Health Sciences (NTR-UHS), acting on the state government's directions, has sought a further 15 days to complete the admission process and fill the vacant seats.
NTR-UHS registrar has written to NMC chairperson as well as Director-General of Health Services, seeking extension of time for admissions and a reduction in the NEET-UG 2026 qualifying percentile.
The deadline for completing MBBS and BDS admissions for the current academic year is October 26. The university conducted the first, second and third (mop-up) rounds of counselling, followed by the stray vacancy round in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.
After completion of the stray vacancy counselling on October 23, 112 NRI-quota MBBS seats have remained vacant.
The NTR University of Health Sciences has thus requested the National Medical Commission to relax the NEET-UG qualifying percentile, so that the remaining seats could be filled. The university further sought an extension of the admission deadline by 15 days to complete the counselling and admissions process.
In its communication, the NTR-UHS has referred to a separate request by secretary-general of the Andhra Pradesh Private Medical and Dental Colleges Managements Association, who has sought an extension of the MBBS admission deadline until November 20, 2026.
The NMC has indicated that it will examine the university's letter after the existing admission deadline expires on October 26 and take an appropriate decision.
Of the 112 vacant NRI-quota seats, 95 are in private medical colleges. The remaining vacancies include nine seats at the Paderu Government Medical College and eight at the Padmavathi Medical College.
