Nellore: Kovur police on Wednesday arrested Nidigunta Aruna and three of her associates on charges of threatening, extorting and attempting to forcibly register a flat in her name.

According to police, complainant Munaga Venkata Murali Krishnamohan, a local builder, had constructed Sai Enclave Apartments in 2010. While 14 flats had been sold, Flat No. 503 remained with him.

In December 2020, Aruna rented the flat. Later, she entered into a sale agreement in her father’s name in 2022 for purchasing the flat for Rs 28 lakh, paying Rs 3 lakh in advance. After that, she neither cleared the balance nor continued rent payments.

When Murali moved court, Aruna allegedly unleashed a reign of intimidation, demanding that the flat be registered in her name. The dispute escalated in November 2024, when Aruna, along with associates Pallam Venu, Ankemi Raja and Seeram Elish, allegedly abducted Murali at knifepoint to Pellakuru Colony. There they forced him to sign an agreement showing that Aruna had paid ₹5 lakh.

Murali later lodged a complaint, leading to a case being registered under sections of criminal intimidation, extortion and attempt to murder.

Taking a serious note of the case, Nellore SP G. Krishnakanth formed special teams led by Additional SP (Admin) Soujanya and DSP (Rural) G. Srinivasulu. In a swift operation, police intercepted Aruna’s car at Addanki toll plaza as she attempted to flee and arrested her along with her aides.

Aruna, a homemaker, rose to infamy during the previous YSRCP regime. She has been accused of wielding political and police influence to terrorise people. She hit headlines recently for her alleged role in securing parole for rowdy-sheeter Srikanth, a life convict in a murder case—sparking a political storm in Andhra Pradesh.

Home minister Anitha, only a day earlier, had acknowledged lapses in Srikanth’s parole case and vowed to take stern action against such “lawless elements.” Within 24 hours, Aruna has been put behind the bars, giving a dramatic turn to the high-profile controversy.

SP Krishnakanth praised Kovur circle inspector V. Sudhakar Reddy, sub-inspector Y. Ranganath Goud, and other staff for their swift and professional action in nabbing the accused.
