Vijayawada: Kakinada-based NGO Animal Rescue Organisation has appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government to stop cockfights during the ensuing Sankranti festival, citing a High Court ban on the practice.
In a representation to the Chief Secretary and concerned departments, the NGO’s founder-secretary Gopal R. Surabathula expressed concern over the continued conduct of cockfights in several parts of the state despite court orders in force since 2021. He alleged that some landowners were willingly allowing their land to be used for the events and enabling spectators to witness acts of cruelty.
Referring to the practice of tying knives to the talons of roosters, he described the events as inhumane and called for strict action against organisers, landowners and participants. Citing High Court directions and central legislation banning animal fights, the NGO urged immediate enforcement.
The organisation also sought the formation of enforcement committees to prevent illegal gatherings and recommended invoking provisions of the AP Gaming Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
