Nellore: The SPSR Nellore police have stepped up round-the-clock surveillance, intensified vehicle checks and launched a road safety initiative to reduce night-time accidents across the district.

Acting on the directions of superintendent of police Dr Ajitha Vejendla, police teams have increased deployment at major junctions, highways and other sensitive locations to strengthen public safety, maintain law and order, and deter crime.

Special drives are under way against drunken driving, open consumption of alcohol, overspeeding and other traffic violations. Night patrols have also been strengthened in urban, suburban and highway areas, while police are conducting checks to curb the illegal transportation of goods and other unlawful activities.

As part of the road safety campaign, the district police have launched the 'Face Wash and Go' initiative on national and state highways. Drivers found to be fatigued during night travel are being stopped at designated safe points and advised to wash their faces, drink water and take a short break before continuing their journey.

The police appealed to the public to report suspicious persons or objects by calling Dial 112, the police control room (93929 03413) or the Eagle Cell toll-free number 1972, saying public cooperation was vital for maintaining law and order and ensuring road safety.
