Nellore: Minister for municipal administration and urban development Dr Ponguru Narayana led a significant public rally on Saturday as part of the ‘Swachh Andhra - Swachh Divas’ initiative, reaffirming the state government's commitment to a cleaner and greener Andhra Pradesh.
The rally, which began at VRC Centre and culminated at Nartaki Centre, saw thousands of participants raising slogans promoting cleanliness along Trunk Road. Narayana paid floral tributes to the statues of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, and former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, acknowledging their contributions to the nation.
At the rally’s conclusion, Narayana administered a cleanliness pledge to the crowd. He said, “We observe Swachh Divas on the third Saturday of every month, each with a new theme. Our vision, as outlined by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is to make Andhra Pradesh the cleanest state in India.”
The minister criticised the previous government for its negligence in sanitation, highlighting the visible garbage and waste accumulation despite a garbage tax being in place. He emphasised that under the current leadership, tax revenues are being properly used for municipal development.
Narayana also inaugurated a bio-mining unit at the Allipuram dumping yard, set up by Jigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt. Ltd., to segregate legacy waste. He expressed confidence that Andhra Pradesh would be declared a garbage-free state by October this year.
The event was attended by Swachh Andhra Corporation MD B. Anil Kumar Reddy, Pollution Control Board Chairman P. Krishnayya, and other key officials.
