Visakhapatnam:Muslim minority leaders in the Telugu Desam have urged the party leadership to allot at least 10 seats to Muslim candidates in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) council elections.

They said the expanded council had 120 wards and that the Muslim population within the corporation limits, from Bheemili to Anakapalli, was around 60,000. The outgoing council had only two minority corporators, they said.

A delegation of Muslim minority leaders met Mohammed Ahmed Shareef, chief adviser to the Andhra Pradesh government on minorities, former chairman of the Legislative Council and Visakhapatnam district election in-charge. The meeting was attended by TD district president Chode Venkata Pattabhiram and district general secretary Lodagala Krishna.

The delegation submitted a representation seeking adequate representation for Muslim minorities in the upcoming elections. The leaders also congratulated Shareef on his appointment as observer for the local body elections.

They said Muslim minorities had remained committed to the TD’s ideology since the party’s inception and had consistently worked for its growth and strengthening.

The delegation urged the party leadership to recognise the aspirations of minority leaders and workers active in district politics and public service. It said allotting at least 10 seats to Muslim candidates would improve their representation in elected local bodies and boost the morale of party cadres.

The leaders expressed confidence that greater representation would encourage party workers and support the TD’s organisational efforts during the elections.
