The accused, identified as B. Venkatamma, a widow, had been living with her 17-year-old daughter and son-in-law, M. Charan, aged 20. The girl had married Charan three months ago following a love affair.
According to police, Venkatamma had recently developed an illicit relationship with Charan. On Friday night, she reportedly tried to perform a marriage ceremony with him in front of her daughter. When the girl resisted, Venkatamma allegedly attacked her with a grinding stone.
Hearing the girl’s screams, Venkatamma’s brother Bangaraiah and sister-in-law Kalpana rushed to the spot and confronted the accused. In the ensuing scuffle, all three sustained injuries. Locals intervened and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.
Based on a complaint lodged by Bangaraiah, KVB Puram Sub-Inspector G. Naresh registered a case and initiated an investigation. The SI said that although the accused’s family had requested police to drop the case citing close family ties, police have not taken any decision yet, as the girl is a minor.
