Molten Steel Spill At VSP Unit, None Hurt

VISAKHAPATNAM: Molten steel spilled into a special container and onto the floor after a ladle slide gate failed to close properly at SMS-1 of the CCD section of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Tuesday. No injuries were reported.
Senior CITU leader J. Aodhyaram said SMS-1 had remained closed after the June 8 accident in which 10 workers were killed. It was reopened on Monday after special pujas, during which lunch was served to 400 workers.
He said the machines were 40 years old and needed to be replaced, besides better maintenance. He added that no worker was present in the affected area when the incident occurred.
A spokesperson of RINL, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, described it as a small mishap and said there were no injuries or loss to property.
