NELLORE: Municipal administration and urban development minister P. Narayana on Wednesday reviewed key civic and development works at a meeting held at the Nellore Municipal Corporation office, with a focus on flood prevention, housing and public grievances.

The minister directed officials to restore and modernise irrigation and drainage canals to avert flooding and ensure speedy redressal of grievances raised at public hearings. He also issued instructions on the distribution of house-site pattas and the protection of government lands from encroachments.

Addressing the media, Narayana said canal modernisation plans had been revised to minimise displacement, noting that nearly 80 per cent of houses would not require removal. For the remaining cases, he assured alternative arrangements for poor families. He alleged that some sections were attempting to mislead the public for political reasons and urged citizens not to panic.

In-charge mayor Roop Kumar Yadav said flood prevention was the Minister’s top priority and noted that `50 crore had been sanctioned for canal restoration despite financial constraints. He said decisions on encroachment removal were taken with care to avoid hardship to the poor.

The minister also reviewed education initiatives, stating that municipal high schools were being upgraded to international standards. He said the VRC had already been launched and announced plans to modernise 14 more schools by the next academic year.

The meeting was attended by municipal commissioner Nandan, RDO Anusha, in-charge mayor Roop Kumar Yadav, deputy mayor Tahseen Intiaz and senior officials from various departments.
