Visakhapatnam: In the Kommadi area here, a new trend is evident in the education sector. Government schools that were viewed for long as the refuge of children from poor families are now attracting students from middle-income families.

At the Chandrampalem Government High School, the state’s largest in terms of student enrollment, parents with monthly incomes of around Rs 50,000 are lining up for their children’s admission.
Principal Gottipati Ravi told Deccan Chronicle, "Middle-income employees from government as well as private companies are seeking seats for their children. We've received over 300 applications so far, and we anticipate a surge by the time the school-year begins."
Feelings have strengthened that government schools offer quality education with enhanced facilities.
Currently, the Chandrampalem high school enrolls 1,653 girls and 1,582 boys. The school has seen an increase in admissions over recent years, with 588 new students arriving in the 2022-23 school year, 572 in 2023-24, and more than 600 for 2024-25.
Enhancements in infrastructure have played a pivotal role in the school’s rising popularity. Digital teaching tools, such as interactive plot panels and smart TVs in 62 classrooms, are redefining learning experiences.
Additionally, four more classrooms are being constructed. With a dedicated team of 104 teachers, one headmaster and three administrative staff, the Chandrampalem high school is expected to draw an extra 800 to 1,000 students this year.
Parents now see government-school education as a viable alternative to expensive private schooling as, unlike in the past, they offer quality, affordability and modern facilities.
