NALGONDA: Students of Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), located at Anneparthy in Nalgonda district, staged a dharna at the main gate of the university on Monday after allegedly finding pieces of gutkha packets in jeera rice served as breakfast at the boys’ hostel.

The students carried plates and cooking utensils containing the jeera rice to the main gate and held a protest. They alleged that insects had also been found earlier in the food served at the hostel mess. Raising slogans against the vice-chancellor, the students accused the university authorities of negligence in maintaining hostel facilities at the cost of students’ health.

Speaking on the occasion, Students Federation of India (SFI) MGU secretary Kadem Ravi Kumar said the university authorities had failed to ensure hygienic conditions in the boys’ mess, adversely affecting students’ health. He demanded action against the hostel in-charge, holding him responsible for the lapse. The students continued the dharna at the university’s main gate for about three hours, creating tension on the campus.

The protest was withdrawn after vice-chancellor Khaja Althaf Hussain assured the students that action would be taken against the employees responsible.
