Eluru district educational officer (DEO) has issued memos to the headmaster and physical education teacher (PET) of the Zilla Parishad High School at Velpucherla in Musunuru mandal after a girl student studying in Class VIII fainted after doing 25 sit-ups in punishment.

PET Venkateswara Rao had ordered 26 students of the class, both girls and boys, to do 25 sit-ups in punishment for not wearing shoes and proper uniforms despite repeated instructions over several days. All the 25 students completed their sit-ups but one girl fainted at the end of her punishment.

Teachers of the school took the girl to her home, where her parents expressed anger that they should have taken their daughter to the hospital first for treatment. The teachers then admitted the girl to the Government General Hospital.

Doctors said the girl had fainted due to dehydration. After treatment, the doctors discharged the girl, who is resting at her home.

As the word spread, Housing minister K. Partha Saradhi visited the girl and enquired about the incident. He later inspected the school and reprimanded the teachers.

Following the minister’s visit, DEO Pathibanda Sudhakar also visited the girl’s house and the school to inquire into the matter. Sudhakar said that he has submitted his report to higher authorities, who will take further action.

According to sources, memos have been issued to the PET as well as the headmaster over the incident.
