Massive Power Infrastructure Push To Turn Kurnool Into an Energy Hub
State boosts power infrastructure to support industries, agriculture and cities
Kurnool: With rapid industrialisation gaining momentum in Kurnool district, the state government is significantly strengthening power infrastructure in the region to meet rising electricity demand. This is expected to turn Kurnool into a major energy hub of Andhra Pradesh.
Industrial activity is expanding in the area, particularly around the Orvakal Industrial Hub. Authorities are thus prioritising development of robust electricity networks benefiting not only Kurnool but also the neighbouring Nandyal district. This would meet the increasing needs of the agriculture sector as well as the growing requirements of urban centres across Rayalaseema.
A key highlight of this infrastructure push is the establishment of a 765 / 400 kV Power Grid substation at Orvakal. This high-capacity facility is considered a strategic asset at the state level. It plays a crucial role in ensuring reliable and quality power supply across the region. Officials are even calling it the backbone of electricity distribution in Rayalaseema.
In addition, Kurnool district has witnessed substantial expansion in substation infrastructure. Eight 132 kV substations and another eight 220 kV substations have already been set up, significantly enhancing the stability and efficiency of power supply.
“These high-voltage substations form the foundation for uninterrupted and quality electricity supply,” said S. Mahaboob Basha, DE (Operations) of the Power department. “They not only meet current demand but will facilitate the future industrial growth in the region,” he pointed out.
The development has improved interstate power connectivity. The enhanced grid network now facilitates better linkage with neighbouring states, such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as major urban centres like Chennai.
The impact of these developments is already being felt on the ground. Several regions, including Yemmiganur, Gonegandla, Holagunda, Devanakonda, C. Belagal, and Kodumur, are benefiting from the newly established 132 kV substations.
“Earlier, we used to face frequent voltage fluctuations. Now, power supply has become stable, which is crucial for our operations,” said M. Muralidhara, a brick industry owner from Devanakonda.
Further strengthening the grid, areas like Pattikonda and Kurnool now have access to 220 kV and 400 kV substations, enabling efficient handling of heavy electrical loads. Border mandals, such as Mantralayam, Kosigi, and Kowthalam located along the Karnataka boundary, are also experiencing improved connectivity and uninterrupted supply.
“Kurnool, especially Orvakal, is poised to become a large industrial hub. We estimate that an additional 10,000 acres will be required to support upcoming industries. Accordingly, we are further scaling up power infrastructure,” said Kurnool district collector Dr. A. Siri.
