A Pocso court in Prakasam district on Thursday sentenced Erragonna Chaitanya, 21, of Singarayakonda mandal to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a ₹12,000 fine for sexually assaulting a minor girl. The court also directed payment of ₹2 lakh compensation to the victim.

Chaitanya assaulted the 17-year-old girl at her residence on November 22, 2020, when she was alone. Based on her complaint, the Ongole Women police station registered a case. Then-DSP M. Dhanunjayudu investigated the case, arrested the accused and filed the charge sheet.

During the trial, police produced witnesses before the court. Special Public Prosecutor Gottipati Srinivasa Rao argued the case.

A special POCSO monitoring team, working under the guidance of Prakasam SP V. Harshavardhan Raju, ensured effective prosecution and presented the necessary evidence leading to the conviction.

The SP appreciated then-DSP M. Dhanunjayudu, Ongole Women police station DSP P. Sridhar, CI Y. Nagaraju, Special PP Gottipati Srinivasa Rao, Court Liaison ASI E.V. Swamy and PCs Yellamanda and K. Srinivas (PC 2383) for their work in securing the conviction.
