Visakhapatnam: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory anticipating development of a new low-pressure area over northern Bay of Bengal around Thursday, which is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

As per IMD’s latest update, a cyclonic circulation, which is a remnant of Tropical Cyclone WIPHA, is expected to form over northern Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. This system is anticipated to intensify into a low-pressure area in the same region during the next 24 hours.

The upper air cyclonic circulation previously located over coastal AP and adjacent south Odisha coasts has now moved to north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, another cyclonic circulation remains present over the west-central and neighbouring northwest Bay of Bengal, situated between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level.

On Wednesday, the highest rainfall has been recorded at Kalingapatnam (1.5 cm), followed by Nandyal (0.9 cm), Tirupathi (0.6 cm), Machilipatnam (0.4 cm), and Amaravati (0.3 cm). Temperature deviations of 2–6 degrees Celsius above the normal range have been noted in the impacted areas.

IMD has provided weather alerts for the upcoming five days while the low-pressure system evolves ove Bay of Bengal. Isolated instances of heavy rainfall have been forecast across north coastal AP (NCAP) and Yanam, with potential for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in isolated locations over NCAP, Yanam and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
