Andhra Pradesh minister N. Lokesh.

Education, IT and electronics minister N. Lokesh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for highlighting the resumption of domestic production of Penicillin G in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, after years of absence.

In a post on X, Lokesh said, “Proud that Kakinada is at the heart of India’s return to making Penicillin G. Thank you, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for highlighting this milestone. Lyfius Pharma, part of Aurobindo Pharma, runs a 15,000 MT plant at Kakinada under the PLI scheme, helping cut India’s dependence on imported raw materials for essential antibiotics. Andhra Pradesh is ready to play a key role in building a self-reliant pharmaceutical supply chain for the nation.”

The resumption of Penicillin G production is part of efforts to strengthen India’s domestic pharmaceutical industry and reduce dependence on imported raw materials. The initiative also aims to build a domestic supply chain for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which are used in the manufacture of medicines.

Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, more than `5,000 crore has been invested and around 40 projects initiated to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and support self-reliance.
