Cows and other livestock at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) grounds are reportedly suffering from a lack of food, clean water and medical care.
Locals said the animals had not received adequate feed for nearly 15 days and were struggling amid heavy rains over the past three days. Some were reportedly surviving on contaminated water, while weak animals were unable to stand.
Social activist D.N. Ramesh alleged that officials had failed to provide timely care to sick and weak cattle. He said the premises had become muddy and unhygienic and urged district collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad to take immediate steps to protect the animals.
Some locals provided food to the animals on Saturday.
