KURNOOL: Panic gripped residents of Sunnipenta in Srisailam mandal of Nandyal district after a leopard was spotted near a residential area in the early hours of Sunday.

According to residents, the leopard was seen prowling near a house in the Genco Colony area and reportedly attempted to prey on a chicken kept inside a box placed in front of the house. However, the bird escaped unhurt as the box was secured with iron grills, preventing the animal from reaching it.

After several failed attempts, the leopard retreated from the area.

Residents recorded the incident on their mobile phones and videos of the leopard sighting later went viral on social media.

This is the second reported leopard sighting in the area within a month. Around 20 days ago, two leopards were reportedly spotted inside the premises of an ITI college in Sunnipenta.

Forest officials had then installed traps to capture the animals, but the efforts were unsuccessful.

Repeated sightings of leopards entering human habitations have raised concern among residents of the agency area, with locals claiming that movement of big cats has increased over the past two months.

Forest officials advised residents to remain alert and avoid venturing out alone during night hours.

A resident, B. Shiva Naik, said frequent leopard sightings had become a serious concern for people living in the area.

“We are worried about when and where the animal might attack,” he said.
