TIRUPATI: A leopard was sighted near the Bala Gangamma Temple at East Balaji Nagar in Tirumala on Monday night, raising concerns over the frequent movement of wild animals in the area.

The CCTV footage, which surfaced on Tuesday morning, captured the leopard lurking close to the temple before swiftly pouncing in the direction of the cat, which managed to escape. The incident occurred close to a residential locality where Tirumala residents live, prompting serious concerns over public safety.

Upon receiving information, forest officials from the Tirumala Wildlife division rushed to the location and inspected the surrounding area. They confirmed the leopard’s presence and initiated safety protocols. “We are monitoring the area and have increased patrolling, especially during night hours. Additional camera traps have been installed to track the leopard’s movement,” said a senior forest officer.

This is not the first time leopards have been sighted in and around Tirumala. The dense forest cover of the Seshachalam Hills, which encircles the hill town, is a known habitat for leopards and other wildlife. While forest officials note that the big cats typically avoid human contact, sporadic intrusions have been recorded in recent times.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant. “People are advised not to venture out alone during the night, especially in areas adjoining forest patches. Children should not be left unattended,” the forest department stated.
