Kurnool: A constable attached to the protocol wing at Mantralayam in Kurnool district carried the body of a woman who died by suicide in the Tungabhadra river for nearly a kilometre to bring it to the riverbank on October 11.
According to Mantralayam circle inspector M. Dastagiri Babu, the woman and her husband, who were from Karnataka, had visited Mantralayam to offer prayers to Sri Raghavendra Swamy.
Before entering the river, the woman reportedly called her daughter and told her that she was going to die by suicide.
“Her daughter called us from Raichur.
Our entire team immediately rushed to the spot to rescue the woman.
Using her mobile phone location, we traced her to the vicinity, but by the time we reached there, her body was already there in the river,” the CI said.
Police spotted the woman’s body floating in the Tungabhadra, nearly a kilometre from the bank.
The CI said local residents and temple staff did not come forward to retrieve the body.
“Since nobody came forward to bring the body to the bank, constable Gairuboni Rangaswamy stepped in and bravely entered the river.
He carried the body on his back for nearly a kilometre and brought it to the bank,” Dastagiri Babu said.
The body was shifted to Mantralayam hospital for a post-mortem examination and handed over to the woman’s family after the procedure was completed.
